Chromium - Feed Ingredient

Chromium is a trace mineral that plays a role in carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism, primarily by enhancing the action of insulin. In horses, chromium is typically supplemented in the form of organic complexes such as chromium picolinate or chromium yeast to improve bioavailability. While not considered an essential nutrient for equines by current nutritional standards, chromium has gained interest for its potential benefits in glucose utilization and metabolic support.

In equine nutrition, chromium supplementation is often targeted toward performance horses, senior horses, or those with insulin resistance or metabolic disorders. It may help improve glucose uptake into cells, support stable blood sugar levels, and enhance energy metabolism during exercise. Some research suggests chromium may reduce the stress response by modulating cortisol levels. However, evidence on its efficacy in horses remains limited and somewhat inconsistent.
