Citrus Bioflavonoids - Feed Ingredient
Citrus bioflavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds extracted primarily from citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits. These compounds include rutin, hesperidin, naringin, quercetin, and diosmin, among others. They are typically found in the rind, pulp, and membranes of citrus fruits and are often obtained as byproducts from citrus juice processing.
In equine feed and supplement formulations, citrus bioflavonoids are used for their antioxidant properties. These compounds have been shown to scavenge free radicals and modulate oxidative stress pathways, which may support cellular integrity. Additionally, bioflavonoids are known to influence capillary permeability and vascular tone and are sometimes included in formulations alongside vitamin C due to their synergistic effects on antioxidant activity.
Citrus bioflavonoids are typically incorporated in dry powdered form or as part of citrus pulp or extract blends.
