Condensed Distillers Solubles - Feed Ingredient
Distillers Solubles are a nutrient-rich byproduct of grain (typically corn) fermentation used to produce ethanol. After the alcohol is removed, the leftover liquid, known as thin stillage, is concentrated into a semi-solid form. It is high in protein, fat, minerals, vitamins, and energy but low in starch. Additionally, the yeast involved in fermentation contributes extra proteins, vitamins, and growth factors, enhancing the nutritional profile.
In equine feed formulations, CDS may be included for its energy content, which is provided by residual sugars and fats. It also contains moderate levels of protein, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Its binding and moistening properties make it useful for pelleted feeds, improving feed texture and reducing dust. The nutrient composition of CDS can vary depending on the grain source and ethanol production process.
