Copper Oxide - Feed Ingredient
Copper oxide, often listed as cupric oxide (CuO), is an inorganic compound used as a trace mineral source in equine feed and supplements. It appears as a black or dark brown powder and is typically included to meet dietary copper requirements. Copper is essential for a range of physiological functions including connective tissue formation, melanin synthesis, and iron metabolism.
In feed formulations, copper oxide is used as one of several copper sources, although it is known for having relatively low bioavailability compared to other forms such as copper sulfate or organic copper chelates. Due to this limited absorption, it may be less effective in raising systemic copper levels, particularly in animals with marginal or deficient copper status. Despite this, it may still be used in some formulations where cost, stability, or specific dietary strategies justify its inclusion.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Copper Oxide as an ingredient.
