Cupric Sulfate - Feed Ingredient

Cupric sulfate, also known as copper sulfate, is an inorganic copper compound commonly used in equine feeds as a source of the essential trace mineral copper. Copper plays a critical role in iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and the proper function of the immune and nervous systems in horses.

In animal nutrition, the pentahydrate form of cupric sulfate is most commonly used. This form contains five water molecules within its crystalline structure, which enhances its stability and facilitates accurate formulation in feed supplements. Cupric sulfate is typically added in measured amounts to ensure that horses receive adequate copper, especially in cases where natural feed sources may be insufficient. Additionally, it must be balanced with other minerals, such as zinc, to maintain optimal nutrient ratios for overall health and performance.

Organic forms of copper, such as copper proteinate or copper chelates, are generally considered more bioavailable than cupric sulfate. These organic compounds are absorbed more efficiently in the digestive tract, which leads to improved copper utilization and overall better health outcomes in horses. As a result, many equine supplements prefer organic copper to help maximize the benefits of copper in the diet while reducing potential mineral interactions.
