Devil’s Claw - Feed Ingredient
Devil’s Claw refers to the plant species Harpagophytum procumbens, native to southern Africa. The name comes from the hook-like appearance of the plant’s seed pods. The parts used for feed or supplement applications are the dried secondary tubers (storage roots), which contain bioactive compounds such as harpagoside, harpagide, and procumbide.
In equine applications, Devil’s Claw is typically incorporated into supplements in dried, powdered, or extract form. It is categorized as a botanical additive and is not used for nutritional contribution but rather for its phytochemical content. The plant’s root is processed through drying and grinding, or extraction with solvents to concentrate its active compounds.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Devil’s Claw as an ingredient.
