Diatomaceous Earth - Feed Ingredient
Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a naturally occurring, silica-rich sedimentary material derived from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of microscopic algae. It consists primarily of amorphous silica and is commonly used in various agricultural applications, including feed additives, anti-caking agents, and pest control.
In equine nutrition, diatomaceous earth is sometimes included in feed formulations or supplements, though its benefits for horses remain largely anecdotal. Some claims suggest that it may aid in digestion or act as a natural dewormer; there is no quality scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. Excessive ingestion of DE could potentially lead to gastrointestinal irritation or reduced nutrient absorption due to its high silica content.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Diatomaceous Earth as an ingredient.
