Esters of L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) - Feed Ingredient

Esters of L-ascorbic acid are chemically modified forms of vitamin C in which the ascorbic acid molecule is esterified with fatty acids, often to improve stability and lipid solubility. Common examples include ascorbyl palmitate and ascorbyl stearate.

In equine nutrition, these esters are used as antioxidant additives and alternative vitamin C sources. Compared to unmodified ascorbic acid, esterified forms are more stable during feed processing and storage, particularly in the presence of heat, light, or oxygen.

While horses can synthesize their own vitamin C, supplementation with stable forms like esters may be beneficial during periods of stress, illness, or aging.
