Ferric Citrate - Feed Ingredient
Ferric citrate is an iron-based compound consisting of ferric iron (Fe³⁺) complexed with citrate ions. It appears as a reddish-brown powder and is used in both human and animal nutrition as a source of dietary iron. In feed applications, ferric citrate may be included as a mineral supplement or functional ingredient, sometimes to enhance iron intake or influence phosphorus metabolism.
In equine nutrition, iron supplementation is rarely necessary. Forage, water, and soil typically provide ample levels of iron, often exceeding the daily requirements of adult horses. Most equine diets already contain iron concentrations well above minimum recommendations. Excessive iron intake can interfere with the absorption of other trace minerals such as zinc and copper and may contribute to imbalances in mineral metabolism.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Ferric Citrate as an ingredient.
