Flaxseed (Linseed) Oil - Feed Ingredient
Flaxseed oil is the fat extracted from the seeds of Linum usitatissimum, commonly known as flax or linseed. It has a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly the omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Unlike whole or ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil is purely fat based, containing no fiber or protein, making it a highly concentrated energy source.
In equine nutrition, flaxseed oil is valued for its role in improving skin and coat condition and providing a slow-release energy source without the risks associated with starch-based feeds. The high omega-3 content helps balance the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in equine diets.
