Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are short-chain carbohydrates composed of fructose molecules, classified as prebiotic fibers. They are naturally found in various plants or can be synthetically produced. FOS are not digested in the small intestine but instead reach the hindgut, where they serve as a fermentable substrate for beneficial bacteria.

In equine nutrition, FOS are included in feed formulations to support the balance of gut microbiota and promote digestive health. By stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria, FOS may help maintain a stable hindgut environment.
