Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) - Feed Ingredient
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid with the chemical structure 18:3 (n-6). It is found in relatively high concentrations in the oils of certain plants such as evening primrose, borage, and blackcurrant seed.
GLA is synthesized in the body from linoleic acid via the enzyme delta-6-desaturase, though this conversion can be limited by factors such as age, stress, or dietary imbalances. Supplementing with GLA-rich oils may bypass this rate-limiting step and support the production of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids.
