Garlic Oil - Feed Ingredient
Garlic oil is an extract derived from garlic (Allium sativum), obtained through steam distillation or solvent extraction of garlic bulbs. It contains concentrated volatile compounds, primarily organosulfur substances like allicin, diallyl disulfide, and diallyl trisulfide, which contribute to its characteristic pungent aroma and flavor. Garlic oil is commonly employed in nutritional supplements and animal feed products due to purported health benefits, including immune support and antioxidant properties.
However, feeding garlic or garlic-derived products, including garlic oil, to horses remains controversial and poses several health concerns. Excessive or prolonged ingestion of garlic can lead to oxidative damage of red blood cells, potentially resulting in Heinz-body anemia. Additionally, despite anecdotal claims, scientific evidence does not support the efficacy of orally administered garlic oil in repelling insects or reducing bug bites in horses. Owners considering the use of garlic oil in equine diets should exercise caution, strictly limit the dosage, and consult veterinary guidance to prevent potential adverse effects.
