Omneity® Pellets
All-In-One Vitamin & Mineral Pellet
Garlic (Allium sativum) is sometimes included in equine feed and supplements, often for its perceived benefits as a natural insect repellent. It contains organosulfur compounds, such as allicin, which contribute to its strong odor and potential biological activity. However, the scientific evidence shows that consumed garlic is not an effective method to manage insects.
Despite its popularity, garlic poses potential risks to horse health. Excessive intake has been linked to hemolytic anemia due to the presence of n-propyl disulfide, a compound that can damage red blood cells. Due to these risks and the lack of conclusive research on its benefits, garlic should be used with caution in equine diets, and its inclusion should be carefully managed to avoid adverse effects.
