Gelatin - Feed Ingredient
Gelatin is a colorless, flavorless, water-soluble protein derived from the partial hydrolysis of collagen, a structural protein found in the connective tissues, skin, and bones of animals. In its processed form, gelatin is obtained by boiling these animal tissues, which causes the collagen to break down and form a gel-like substance when cooled. It is used in both food and pharmaceutical industries for its gelling, stabilizing, and thickening properties.
As a feed ingredient in equine nutrition, gelatin is sometimes included in supplements or specialized formulations. It contains a unique amino acid profile rich in glycine and proline, which are components of collagen. While not a complete protein source for horses, it can contribute to the amino acid pool in the diet.
