Ginkgo Biloba - Feed Ingredient
Ginkgo biloba is a botanical ingredient derived from the leaves of the Ginkgo tree, one of the oldest living tree species. The leaves contain active compounds such as flavonoids and terpenoids (notably ginkgolides and bilobalide), which have been studied for their effects on circulation, oxidative stress, and cognitive function in other species.
In equine nutrition, Ginkgo biloba is used in specialty supplements, typically for its functional properties rather than as a nutrient source. It is sometimes included in formulations aimed at supporting peripheral blood flow or as part of herbal blends intended for older horses or those under stress.
While generally considered safe at low inclusion rates, Ginkgo biloba should be used with caution due to its potential to affect blood clotting. Its use in horse feed is not widespread and is limited to targeted applications. Standardization of extracts and careful formulation are important to ensure consistency and safety in equine products.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Ginkgo Biloba as an ingredient.
