Grape Pomace - Feed Ingredient

Grape pomace is the byproduct remaining after the pressing of grapes for juice or wine production. It consists of grape skins, seeds, and stems, and is a fibrous material rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and residual sugars. The composition of grape pomace varies depending on the grape variety and processing methods, but it generally contains moderate levels of fiber, fat (from the seeds), and antioxidants.

In equine nutrition, grape pomace is sometimes included in feed formulations as a fiber source or for its antioxidant properties. The polyphenols present in grape pomace have been studied for their potential role in supporting oxidative balance. However, care should be taken when feeding grape pomace to horses, as grape seeds contain tannins, and excessive intake may affect nutrient absorption. Additionally, the presence of residual alcohol from fermentation should be considered, and only properly processed grape pomace should be used in equine diets.
