Grass Chaff - Feed Ingredient

Grass chaff refers to chopped or finely shredded grass forage, typically composed of dried or semi-dried grasses such as timothy, ryegrass, or meadow hay. The grass is harvested, dried to an appropriate moisture level, and then mechanically cut into short lengths, usually ranging from 1 to 4 cm. This processing increases convenience in handling and uniformity in mixing with other feed ingredients.

In equine nutrition, grass chaff is commonly included in complete feeds, forage-based mashes, or roughage products to provide a consistent and digestible source of forage fiber. Its inclusion helps simulate natural foraging behavior and promotes chewing, which in turn supports saliva production and gastric buffering. Grass chaff may also be used to dilute concentrate feeds, slow feed intake, and encourage better digestion, especially in horses that bolt their feed or are prone to gastric disturbances.
