Green Peas - Feed Ingredient
Green Peas, derived from Pisum sativum, are a legume commonly used in animal feeds either whole, split, or ground into meal. They are harvested while still immature and may be used fresh, dried, or processed. In equine nutrition, green peas are included primarily for their protein and starch content, as well as for their palatability and natural origin.
Green peas are a moderate-to-high protein feed ingredient with a favorable amino acid profile compared to many other plant sources; however they may be low in the amino acid methionine. They also provide digestible carbohydrates and small amounts of vitamins and minerals. When included in horse feeds, they can contribute to the overall protein and energy levels of the diet. However, like other legumes, peas contain antinutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors and tannins, which are generally reduced by heat treatment or proper processing.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Green Peas as an ingredient.
