Hemp Seed Meal - Feed Ingredient
Hemp Seed Meal is the byproduct remaining after oil is extracted from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is typically produced through mechanical cold pressing, which leaves behind a high-fiber, protein-rich cake that is then ground into meal form. Hemp seed meal is non-psychoactive and contains negligible levels of THC, the compound associated with cannabis’s psychoactive properties.
In equine feed formulations, hemp seed meal may be used as a plant-based protein and fiber source. It contains a balanced array of amino acids and is also rich in essential fatty acids, though the oil content is significantly reduced during processing. The protein content and composition make it a candidate for alternative protein supplementation, especially in specialty or natural feed products.
However, the digestibility and bioavailability of hemp seed meal protein in horses are not well-established.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Hemp Seed Meal as an ingredient.
