Hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) - Feed Ingredient
Hydroxymethylbutyrate, commonly abbreviated as HMB, is a metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine. Its full chemical name is β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate. HMB is naturally produced in the body in small amounts during the metabolism of leucine and is also available as a synthetic supplement, typically in the form of calcium HMB (Ca-HMB).
In equine nutrition, HMB may be included in specialized supplement formulations, particularly those targeting performance or recovery. It is studied for its potential effects on muscle metabolism and protein turnover. Commercial HMB is typically produced through chemical synthesis or microbial fermentation processes.
