Indian Madder - Feed Ingredient
Indian Madder, scientifically known as Rubia cordifolia, is a perennial climbing plant native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Asia. The root of the plant is the primary part used, typically dried and ground into powder or extracted for use in traditional medicine and botanical formulations.
It contains bioactive compounds such as anthraquinones (e.g., purpurin, munjistin), which are associated with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects in other species. Indian Madder has been traditionally used to support circulatory health, liver function, and skin conditions.
In equine nutrition, Rubia cordifolia may appear in herbal blends, although its use is uncommon and not supported by equine-specific research. Due to the presence of anthraquinones, which can have laxative effects, its inclusion should be carefully considered and used only under veterinary guidance.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Indian Madder as an ingredient.
