Inulin - Feed Ingredient
Inulin is a naturally occurring polysaccharide classified as a fructan. It is found in a variety of plants, with chicory root being the most common commercial source. Inulin is not digested by enzymes in the horse’s small intestine, allowing it to reach the hindgut intact where it serves as a fermentable fiber.
In equine nutrition, inulin is used as a prebiotic ingredient to support beneficial hindgut microbiota, particularly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. By promoting the growth of these bacteria, inulin can contribute to improved fiber fermentation and overall gut health. It is typically included in supplements or specialized feed formulations targeting digestive support.
