Iodine Supplement - Feed Ingredient
An iodine supplement is a feed additive used to provide dietary iodine, an essential trace mineral required for normal thyroid function and hormone synthesis in horses. Iodine plays a vital role in the production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), hormones that regulate metabolic rate, growth, and development.
In equine feeds, iodine may be supplied in various forms, including calcium iodate, potassium iodide, ethylenediamine dihydroiodide (EDDI), or kelp meal (from iodine-rich seaweed). These sources differ in bioavailability and stability, with calcium iodate being commonly used due to its resistance to degradation during feed processing.
