Kale - Feed Ingredient
Kale is a leafy green vegetable in the Brassicaceae family, related to cabbage and broccoli. It is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, potassium, and phytonutrients like lutein and beta-carotene. In equine nutrition, kale is typically used in dried or powdered form, often as part of herbal blends or treat formulations.
Kale is occasionally included in small amounts as a complementary feed ingredient for its micronutrient content. However, its use is limited by the presence of oxalates, which can interfere with calcium absorption, and goitrogenic compounds, such as glucosinolates, which may impact thyroid function. As with other brassicas, feeding kale in large quantities is not recommended for horses due to these potential effects.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Kale as an ingredient.
