Kaolin - Feed Ingredient
Kaolin, also known as china clay, is a naturally occurring soft clay primarily composed of the mineral kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate. It is mined from sedimentary deposits and then processed by drying, milling, and sometimes purifying to remove impurities. Kaolin is used in animal feed primarily for its functional properties rather than nutritional value.
In equine feed formulations, kaolin is utilized as a binder, flow agent, or anti-caking agent in powdered or pelleted products. It may also be included in gastrointestinal support supplements due to its adsorbent properties, which allow it to bind toxins, excess moisture, or digestive irritants in the gastrointestinal tract. However, excessive or prolonged use may interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients or medications by physically binding them in the gut.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Kaolin as an ingredient.
