Lactobacillus plantarum is a species of lactic acid bacteria commonly used as a probiotic in equine and other livestock feed formulations. It is capable of surviving in a range of pH and temperature conditions, making it a resilient organism within the gastrointestinal environment. Naturally found in fermented foods and the gastrointestinal tracts of animals, L. plantarum is recognized for its ability to produce lactic acid and compete against pathogenic microbes.

In equine nutrition, L. plantarum is included to support hindgut microbial balance, enhance fermentation processes, and improve digestive efficiency. Its role in modulating the gut microbiota can contribute to more stable intestinal conditions, especially during periods of stress, illness, antibiotic use, or dietary changes. It is typically administered in a lyophilized (freeze-dried) form and may be found in powdered, pelleted, or paste probiotic blends.
