Lignocellulose - Feed Ingredient
Lignocellulose refers to the structural component of plant biomass composed of three primary polymers: cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. It is a fibrous, insoluble material found in the cell walls of plants, particularly abundant in woody and coarse forage materials such as straw, hulls, and other agricultural residues. Lignocellulose is not a single compound but a complex matrix that provides structural strength and rigidity to plant tissues.
In equine feed applications, lignocellulose may be included as a fiber source, especially in processed feeds or supplements that require added roughage. It contributes to gut motility and digestive health by supplying fermentable fiber to the hindgut. While the cellulose and hemicellulose fractions are partially digestible through microbial fermentation in the cecum and colon, the lignin component is indigestible and can limit the digestibility of the associated carbohydrat
