Lithothamnion (Calcified Red Algae) - Feed Ingredient
Lithothamnion is a genus of red marine algae that accumulates calcium carbonate in its cell walls, resulting in a naturally calcified structure. Once harvested, the algae are dried and ground into a fine powder for use in feed applications. This ingredient is commonly referred to as seaweed-derived calcium or calcified red algae and serves as a natural mineral source.
In equine nutrition, Lithothamnion-based calcium is used for its high bioavailability and buffering properties. Its porous, mineral-rich structure makes it effective at neutralizing excess gastric acid, which is beneficial in feeds designed to support gastric health. In addition to calcium, it may supply trace levels of magnesium and other marine-derived minerals.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Lithothamnion (Calcified Red Algae) as an ingredient.
