Malt - Feed Ingredient
Malt is a cereal grain, typically barley, that has undergone the malting process, which involves controlled germination followed by drying. During germination, enzymes are activated that begin converting the grain’s stored starches into simpler sugars. The process is halted by drying the grain in kilns, preserving the enzymatic activity and partially hydrolyzed carbohydrates. The resulting product may be used whole, ground, or as malt extract in feed applications.
In equine feeds, malt can serve as a palatable energy source due to its content of fermentable carbohydrates and sugars. It also contributes to the flavor and aroma of the feed, potentially enhancing feed acceptance, especially in selective or stressed animals. Nutritionally, malt contains some B vitamins and trace minerals, although its primary value lies in its carbohydrate content.
