Marine-Derived Calcium - Feed Ingredient
Marine-derived calcium is a natural mineral source obtained from calcified marine algae, most commonly from red algae in the Lithothamnion genus. These algae absorb calcium and other minerals from seawater, depositing them in their cell walls as calcium carbonate. After harvesting, the algae are dried and milled into a fine powder used in feed and supplement formulations. This ingredient is also known as calcified red algae or Lithothamnion calcium.
In equine nutrition, marine-derived calcium is included as a bioavailable source of calcium and for its natural buffering capacity. Its porous structure allows it to help neutralize excess stomach acid, making it useful in diets formulated to support gastric health. In addition to calcium, it may provide trace amounts of magnesium and other marine minerals.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Marine-Derived Calcium as an ingredient.
