Menadione (Vitamin K3) - Feed Ingredient
Vitamin K₃, or menadione, is a synthetic precursor to active Vitamin K compounds. It is used in equine feed formulations in the form of stabilized derivatives such as menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) or menadione nicotinamide bisulfite (MNB). These forms improve the compound’s stability and allow for easier incorporation into premixes and processed feeds.
In equine nutrition, Vitamin K₃ is included as a supplemental source to support blood clotting and other Vitamin K-dependent physiological processes. However, horses consuming adequate amounts of fresh forage typically receive sufficient Vitamin K₁ from plant sources, and microbial synthesis in the hindgut provides additional Vitamin K₂. As a result, supplemental Vitamin K₃ is generally unnecessary in forage-based diets.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Menadione (Vitamin K3) as an ingredient.
