Micronized Maize - Feed Ingredient

Micronized maize refers to corn that has undergone a specific heat-processing technique known as micronization. This process involves exposing the grain to infrared heat, which causes structural changes in the starch granules and protein matrix of the maize kernel. As a result, the starch becomes more gelatinized, increasing its digestibility and energy availability for non-ruminant animals such as horses.

In equine nutrition, micronized maize is used as a highly digestible source of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and energy. Compared to raw or ground corn, micronized maize reduces the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut, which can lead to fermentation imbalances or digestive upset. Due to its high starch content, it should be fed in controlled amounts and balanced with adequate fiber to maintain gut health.
