Mold Inhibitor - Feed Ingredient

Mold inhibitors are feed additives used to prevent fungal growth and prolong the shelf life of equine feeds and supplements. These compounds help control the development of mold and yeast, which can produce harmful mycotoxins that negatively impact horse health.

Common mold inhibitors include organic acids such as propionic acid, acetic acid, and benzoic acid, as well as their salts (e.g., calcium propionate, sodium benzoate). These substances work by creating an environment that inhibits mold growth, particularly in high-moisture feeds like pelleted feeds, textured grains, and haylage. Mold inhibitors are generally safe when used at recommended levels, but their effectiveness depends on factors such as storage conditions, feed composition, and humidity levels.
