Mushroom - Feed Ingredient

In equine nutrition, the term “mushroom” typically refers to processed extracts or powders derived from edible or medicinal fungi, such as Cordyceps, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Shiitake, or Turkey Tail. These mushrooms are cultivated, harvested, and dried before being ground into powders or concentrated extracts for use in feed supplements.

Mushrooms are used in equine diets primarily for their functional properties rather than as nutritional feedstuffs. They contain bioactive compounds such as beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and antioxidants, which may support immune modulation and oxidative balance. Their inclusion is usually found in specialty supplements rather than standard feed formulations.
