N-Acetyl-Cysteine - Feed Ingredient
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid cysteine, where an acetyl group is attached to the nitrogen atom. It is commonly used in human and veterinary medicine as a mucolytic agent and antioxidant precursor, particularly for its role in supporting glutathione synthesis, a critical intracellular antioxidant.
In equine feed and supplement formulations, NAC may be included for its functional properties rather than as a basic nutritional component. It is not an essential amino acid, but it provides a bioavailable source of cysteine, which can be limiting in certain physiological states. NAC’s sulfhydryl group is responsible for its antioxidant activity and ability to interact with reactive oxygen species.
NAC is typically used in targeted equine supplements formulated to support respiratory function, detoxification pathways, or oxidative stress response.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain N-Acetyl-Cysteine as an ingredient.
