Novaluron - Feed Ingredient
Novaluron is a synthetic insect growth regulator (IGR) classified as a benzoylphenyl urea compound. It functions by inhibiting chitin synthesis, a critical component of the insect exoskeleton, thereby disrupting molting and development in immature stages of insects. Due to this mode of action, novaluron is used as an insecticide, particularly effective against a wide range of insect pests in agriculture and livestock environments.
In the equine industry, novaluron may be administered as a feed-through fly control agent. When consumed by the horse, the compound passes through the digestive tract and is excreted in the manure, where it targets fly larvae by preventing their maturation. This approach helps reduce the overall fly population in barns and paddocks by interrupting the life cycle of pests such as house flies (Musca domestica).
Its inclusion in equine products is solely for pest control purposes and must comply with regulatory guidelines regarding dosage, safety, and environmental impact. It is not intended for direct insecticidal action on adult flies but rather as a larvicide within manure.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Novaluron as an ingredient.
