Oat Meal - Feed Ingredient
Oat meal refers to ground or rolled oats that have been processed into a fine or coarse meal. It retains much of the nutritional value of whole oats, including carbohydrates, fiber, and moderate protein levels. Oat meal is primarily composed of starch, with a relatively high proportion of digestible energy compared to other grains, making it a common ingredient in equine feeds.
In horse nutrition, oat meal is used as an energy source and is often included in pelleted or textured feeds. The grinding or rolling process disrupts the grain’s outer layers, increasing surface area and gelatinizing some of the starch during pelleting, which enhances starch availability and digestibility in the small intestine. This processing also improves pellet binding and durability, contributing to overall feed consistency and quality. While beneficial for energy delivery, increased starch availability may require careful management in horses prone to metabolic or digestive disorders.
