Oilseed - Feed Ingredient
Oilseed refers to seeds from plants that are grown primarily for the extraction of edible oils. Common examples used in equine nutrition include flaxseed, soybean, sunflower seed, and camelina. These seeds are rich in fat, primarily unsaturated fatty acids, and also provide protein, fiber, and micronutrients.
In equine diets, whole or processed oilseeds are used to increase caloric density and contribute to the overall fatty acid profile. They may be fed whole, ground, extruded, or as meals after oil extraction.
