Oligosaccharides - Feed Ingredient
Oligosaccharides are short-chain carbohydrates composed of a small number (typically 3–10) of monosaccharide units linked together. They are commonly derived from plant sources such as chicory root, sugar beets, or soybeans. In equine nutrition, the most frequently used oligosaccharides include fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS).
Oligosaccharides are not digested in the foregut of the horse but pass into the hindgut where they serve as fermentable fiber for beneficial gut microbes. They are included in equine feeds and supplements as functional ingredients to support microbial balance and digestive health. Oligosaccharides are not a direct source of energy, protein, or essential nutrients, but their fermentative properties may aid in stabilizing the hindgut environment, especially during dietary transitions or periods of stress.
