Organic flaxseed refers to the seeds of Linum usitatissimum that are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These seeds are valued for their rich nutritional profile, particularly their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, and plant-based protein. Flaxseeds may be fed whole or ground into a meal, ground flaxseed being the preferred form for improved digestibility.
In equine diets, flaxseed serves as a beneficial source of essential fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). It is prized for its high ratio of omega-3:omega-6.
