Organic Iron - Feed Ingredient
Organic iron refers to iron that is bound to an organic molecule, typically an amino acid or protein ligand, to improve bioavailability. Common forms include iron proteinate, iron amino acid chelate, and ferrous bisglycinate. These forms are often preferred in supplements due to their enhanced absorption and reduced potential for gastrointestinal irritation compared to inorganic salts.
In equine nutrition, organic iron is included in some feeds or supplements to support red blood cell formation and overall iron status. However, iron supplementation is rarely needed in adult horses, as most forages and water sources naturally provide more than adequate levels of iron. Excessive supplementation may interfere with the absorption of other minerals, such as zinc and copper.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Organic Iron as an ingredient.
