Palm Oil - Feed Ingredient
Palm oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the mesocarp (flesh) of the fruit of the oil palm tree. It is a semi-solid fat at room temperature and consists primarily of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, with palmitic acid and oleic acid being the most abundant. It is refined, bleached, and deodorized before use in feed applications to ensure consistency and remove impurities.
In equine nutrition, palm oil is used as an energy-dense fat source in feeds and supplements. It provides a highly digestible form of calories without contributing to starch load, making it suitable for performance horses or those needing weight gain. Palm oil may also serve as a binder or conditioner in pelleted feed manufacturing due to its semi-solid texture.
