Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) - Feed Ingredient

Pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for energy metabolism in horses. It plays a critical role in the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA), which is necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. This vitamin is also involved in the production of steroid hormones, neurotransmitters, and hemoglobin. Naturally present in a variety of feedstuffs, including alfalfa, whole grains, and forage, pantothenic acid is generally abundant in equine diets, making deficiencies rare.

While no specific dietary requirement for pantothenic acid has been established for horses, it is considered an important component of a balanced diet. Horses in high-performance disciplines or those under metabolic stress may have increased demands for B vitamins, though deficiencies in pantothenic acid are uncommon under normal feeding conditions. Symptoms of deficiency, when they occur, may include reduced feed intake, poor coat condition, and impaired growth. Supplementation may be warranted in cases of stress, low forage intake, illness, or heavy workload.
