Peas - Feed Ingredient
Peas are a leguminous plant, commonly used in animal feed due to their high protein content and high amino acid content. They are particularly rich in lysine, an essential amino acid beneficial for muscle development and protein synthesis. However, peas are relatively low in methionine, another essential amino acid, which may require supplementation or dietary balancing when formulating equine rations. Peas also provide fiber and starch, with most of the starch being relatively resistant to foregut digestion unless the bean is processed.
In equine nutrition, peas serve as an alternative protein source in grain mixes and pelleted feeds. Peas are typically included in processed forms, such as flaked or ground, to enhance digestibility. While generally safe, excessive feeding should be avoided as high levels of raw peas may contain anti-nutritional factors like trypsin inhibitors, which can interfere with protein digestion. Proper heat processing can help mitigate these concerns.
