Peppermint Oil - Feed Ingredient

Peppermint oil is a volatile essential oil extracted from the leaves and flowering tops of the peppermint plant (Mentha × piperita), a hybrid species of spearmint and watermint. The oil is obtained through steam distillation and is characterized by its high menthol and menthone content, which impart a distinctive cooling aroma and flavor.

In equine feed and supplement formulations, peppermint oil is primarily used as a natural flavoring agent to enhance palatability. Its strong scent and taste can help mask less desirable odors or flavors in feed products. While peppermint oil has a history of use in herbal medicine for its potential digestive and soothing properties, its inclusion in equine feeds is usually not intended for therapeutic purposes but rather to improve voluntary intake.
