Piperine (Black Pepper Extract) - Feed Ingredient
Piperine is an alkaloid extracted from the dried fruits of the black pepper plant (Piper nigrum). It is the primary bioactive compound responsible for the pungent flavor of black pepper and is typically obtained through solvent extraction or crystallization processes. In animal feed formulations, including those for horses, piperine is used in small amounts primarily as a functional ingredient rather than for nutritional value.
In equine nutrition, piperine is most often included in botanical or nutraceutical supplements to enhance the bioavailability of other compounds, particularly those with low absorption rates. It is known to inhibit certain metabolic enzymes and transporters in the intestinal tract and liver, thereby slowing the metabolism or excretion of co-administered compounds. This effect is especially relevant when piperine is combined with ingredients such as curcumin or other plant-derived actives, where it may increase systemic availability.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Piperine (Black Pepper Extract) as an ingredient.
