Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids - Feed Ingredient
Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) are fatty acids that contain more than one double bond in their carbon chain. The two main categories of PUFAs are omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) fatty acids. Common dietary sources include flaxseed, fish oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil. These fatty acids are considered essential because horses cannot synthesize them in sufficient quantities and must obtain them through the diet.
PUFAs are incorporated into equine feed and supplements primarily as a source of dietary fat and essential fatty acids. They contribute to the energy density of the diet and play structural roles in cell membranes. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is also a consideration in feed formulation, as it may influence biological activity and inflammatory responses.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids as an ingredient.
