Potassium Chloride - Feed Ingredient

Potassium chloride (KCl) is a mineral compound used in animal feed as a source of potassium, an essential electrolyte involved in muscle function, nerve signaling, and fluid balance. It is a highly soluble and bioavailable form of potassium commonly included in equine diets.

In horses, potassium is crucial for maintaining proper hydration, muscle contraction, and overall cellular function. Horses on high-forage diets typically receive sufficient potassium, but those in heavy work while also consuming low-potassium feeds may require supplementation.

However, horses with Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) require careful potassium management, as excessive potassium intake can trigger muscle tremors, weakness, or paralysis. For HYPP-affected horses, potassium chloride should be avoided.
