Potassium Iodate - Feed Ingredient
Potassium iodate (KIO₃) is an inorganic compound used in horse feeds as a stable, cost‑effective source of iodine, an essential trace element. Compared with potassium iodide, KIO₃ is less hygroscopic and more resistant to oxidation during premix manufacture and storage, though its bioavailability is slightly lower. However, it reliably supplies dietary iodine under a wide range of feed‑processing conditions.
For horses, iodine is involved in synthesis of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T₃) and thyroxine (T₄), regulation of basal metabolic rate and thermoregulation, and support of growth, reproduction, and coat quality. While overt iodine deficiency is not common in equines, inadequate intake can impair thyroid function, resulting in goiter, lethargy, or developmental issues in foals. Ensuring sufficient dietary iodine supports growth, endocrine function and metabolic health.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Potassium Iodate as an ingredient.
